Goa Nightclub Owners Held in Thailand Over Deadly Fire That Killed 25
December 11, 2025
Two brothers, Gaurav and Saurabh Luthra, owners of Birch By Romeo Lane nightclub in Goa, were detained in Thailand following a deadly fire that killed 25 people. India's ambassador to Thailand, Nagesh Singh, confirmed this to the BBC on Thursday. The fire started early Sunday, likely caused by fireworks inside the club. Most victims were staff, with five tourists also among the dead. After the blaze, the brothers fled to Phuket. A Delhi court refused them protection from arrest and the Goa government moved to revoke their passports. The Luthras have not spoken publicly, but their lawyer called the case a "witch hunt." Police raided their Delhi home soon after the fire but found them missing. Interpol helped track them down in Thailand. Saurabh Luthra posted a statement expressing "profound grief" and promised support to victims' families. Goa's Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said six people have been arrested so far, with more arrests expected soon. Goa, known for its beaches and nightlife, draws millions of tourists every year.
