Over 5,000 people from multiple villages in Gurla mandal, Vizianagaram district, Andhra Pradesh, are protesting the new greenfield steel plant. The state government gave 1,085 acres of land to Super Smelters Limited in Kella village for the plant, costing around ₹8,570 crore. Buddharaju Rambabu, honorary president of Super Smelter Steel Plant Vyatireka Porata Committee, said, "The livelihood of thousands of farmers would be in danger with the possible destruction of paddy fields after the establishment of the steel plant." Meesala Prasad, the committee convener, echoed this concern. Rambabu told the media, "The Government should choose barren lands for industries instead of disturbing the agriculture lands in Gurla mandal." They vowed to keep protesting until the steel plant proposal is canceled. Government officials stated that the land allocation is official and assured there would be no problems for the villagers in the future.
