A Russian general was killed after a bomb exploded under his car in southern Moscow on Monday morning. Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov, head of the operational training of the Russian armed forces' general staff, died from his injuries. Svetlana Petrenko, spokesperson for Russia’s Investigative Committee, said, "Investigators are pursuing numerous lines of enquiry regarding the murder. One of these is that the crime was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services." The explosion happened at around 7 am in a parking lot on Yaseneva Street with the general inside the car. This attack is the third killing of a senior Russian military officer in one year. In June last year, Lt Gen Igor Kirillov, who led the military’s nuclear, biological, and chemical protection forces, was killed by a bomb hidden on an electric scooter outside his home. Kirillov’s assistant also died. Ukraine’s security service took responsibility for that attack. An Uzbek suspect was arrested and charged for Kirillov’s murder on behalf of Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin called it a "major blunder" by Russia’s security services and said they must improve their work. Earlier in April, another senior officer, Lt Gen Yaroslav Moskalik, deputy head of the general staff's main operational department, was killed by a bomb in his car near his apartment outside Moscow. The suspect was arrested. Moscow blames Ukraine for several bombings and attacks inside Russia.
