Kerala’s Prisons department has given 15-day parole to two convicts in the murder case of Revolutionary Marxist Party leader T.P. Chandrasekharan. Muhammad Shafi and Shinoj, jailed at Kannur Central Jail, were released on this parole. Jail authorities said this was a "routine or natural parole at the end of the year," following prison rules. Another convict, T.K. Rajeesh, had already received parole earlier. Officials said prisoners can get parole based on how long they have been imprisoned: five days after one month, and up to 60 days after one year. Parole was not granted in the last one or two months due to local body elections. Applications submitted by December 31 are now being cleared. However, the parole has triggered political criticism. The Opposition alleges that the ruling Pinarayi Vijayan government, which is nearing its term end, is helping release those convicted in politically motivated murders. Critics question the timing of the parole amid ongoing tensions between CPI(M) and IUML in parts of Kannur. This development adds fresh controversy to an already sensitive political atmosphere in the district.
