The Andaman and Nicobar administration is all set to offer a unique New Year's Eve experience. A special cruise to Barren Island, India's only active volcano, will depart from Haddo Wharf, Sri Vijaya Puram, at 9 p.m. on December 31. The trip will return by 2 p.m. on January 1. Passengers aboard MV Swaraj Dweep will enjoy exotic food, music, and other festive activities. An official said, "This sea voyage will ensure a rare close-up view of the Barren Island, and an unforgettable countdown to the New Year under the stars." The cruise can carry up to 1,200 passengers and has already received a strong public response. Travelers can choose from various travel classes based on their budget and comfort. Catering services will be available throughout the journey. The Directorate of Shipping Services operates the cruise, and tickets are bookable on its website. Prices range from ₹3,180 to ₹8,310 per person. Barren Island lies nearly 140 km from Sri Vijaya Puram, at the meeting point of the Indian and Burmese tectonic plates. The island covers 8.34 sq km, with the closest inhabited areas being Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island) and Narcondam Lookout Post. Barren Island's volcanic activity has been noted as early as 1787, with recent mild eruptions in 1991, 2005, 2017, 2022, and in September and November this year.
