Deadly New Year Blaze at Swiss Bar Kills At Least 40, Investigation Underway
January 4, 2026
At least 40 people died in a fire at Le Constellation, a popular bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana. The blaze happened during New Year celebrations and left 119 injured. Among the dead are 11 minors and six foreign nationals, including Italians, French, Romanians, and Turks. Police identified 24 victims so far, with more identifications ongoing due to severe burns. Authorities suspect the fire started when sparkling candles came too close to the ceiling. Bar owners Jacques and Jessica Moretti are under criminal investigation for homicide and negligence. The resort’s close-knit community is in shock and mourning. Many have left flowers and candles at a makeshift memorial, recalling the young lives lost. Locals and visitors have donated blood and offered homes for families of the victims. Despite the tragedy, skiing continues, but many holidaymakers left early. The investigation will examine bar safety, fire systems, escape routes, and crowd numbers at the time. This sad event has deeply affected Crans-Montana, a place known for luxury skiing and lively New Year parties.
