Gunmen Kill 30 Villagers and Abduct Several in Niger State Raid
January 4, 2026
At least 30 villagers were killed and several others abducted when gunmen raided Kasuwan-Daji village in northern Nigeria’s Niger state on Saturday evening, police said Sunday. The attackers stormed the village in Borgu local government area, shooting residents and setting fire to the local market and several houses, said Niger state police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun. Some residents said the death toll could be higher. “At least two residents put the number of people killed at 37 and said it could be much higher, as some people remained missing as of Sunday,” a report said. Residents also stated that security forces had not arrived yet, contradicting police claims that officers were searching for the abducted. Authorities said the attackers came from the National Park Forest along the Kabe district. This shows a pattern where armed gangs use large forest reserves as hideouts. Such attacks are common in Nigeria, which often sees armed gangs targeting remote communities with little security. Saturday’s attack happened near Papiri community, where over 300 schoolchildren and teachers were kidnapped from a Catholic school in November, highlighting the ongoing danger to civilians in the area.
