Pregnant Sunali Khatun Gives Birth After Return From Bangladesh, TMC Calls It 'Triumph of Humanity'
January 5, 2026
Pregnant Sunali Khatun, who was pushed back to Bangladesh, gave birth to a baby boy on Monday, January 5, in India. She had returned to India just weeks earlier after more than six months in Bangladesh. Trinamool Congress national president Abhishek Banerjee called this a “triumph of humanity.” He said on his social media handle X, "I am deeply moved and genuinely heartened to learn that Sunali Khatun has given birth to a healthy baby boy at Rampurhat Medical College, Birbhum." Sunali was falsely accused of being a Bangladeshi national and was forcibly deported in June. She and her minor son returned to India after a Supreme Court order on December 3, coming back to India on December 5. Sunali and her family from Birbhum district were worried the baby’s Indian citizenship might be at risk if he was born in Bangladesh. She was part of a group of six people pushed back into Bangladesh. Four of them remain there. The group included two women—Sunali and Sweety Bibi—and Sweety’s two sons. They spent time in jail in Bangladesh after the alleged pushback. After the incident, the families sent a video plea to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asking for help to return to India. Mr. Banerjee called Sunali’s ordeal a violation of dignity that no citizen, especially a pregnant mother, should face. He said, "Yet, through it all Sunali displayed extraordinary courage and resolve." He also announced he will meet Sunali during a visit to Birbhum on January 6.
