Senior AAP Leaders, Including Goa Ex-President Amit Palekar, Quit After Election Loss
January 5, 2026
In Goa, senior Aam Aadmi Party leaders have stepped down from the party amid a tough election loss. On January 5, 2026, ex-state unit president Amit Palekar, acting chief Shrikrishna Parab, youth wing president Rohan Naik, and three other office-bearers announced their resignations.
Mr. Palekar was removed as Goa AAP president last month after the party won only one of 42 seats in the December 20 Zilla Panchayat polls. Mr. Parab, formerly the general secretary, took over as acting president but is now also quitting. Two vice-presidents, Chetan Kamat and Sarfaraz, confirmed their resignations too.
Speaking at a press conference, Mr. Palekar said, "My followers wanted me to have clarity in my politics." He added, "My four-year journey with the AAP has come to an end and I have no regrets." The lawyer and politician praised leaders like Arvind Kejriwal and Atishi, saying he learned much during his time with the party.
Mr. Palekar had joined AAP before the 2022 Goa assembly elections and was the party's chief ministerial face. However, AAP secured only two seats in the 40-member Assembly.
Acting president Mr. Parab said he resigned to protest the removal of Mr. Palekar from the president's post. The departures mark a major shake-up for AAP in Goa, coming on the heels of a poor showing in local elections.
