Kerala Launches School Health Programme and Marks National Deworming Day
January 6, 2026
Kerala's Health and Education departments will launch a new School Health Programme, said Health Minister Veena George on Tuesday. The goal is to make children health ambassadors, spreading awareness from children to families and beyond. The programme aims to ensure every child's physical and mental well-being while promoting overall body, mind, and intellect development. Children will receive individual health cards to track and assess their health. Ms. George spoke after inaugurating the State-level National Deworming Day event on January 6. She said worm infestation can harm children's growth. The WHO estimates nearly 64% of Indian children aged 1 to 14 are at risk. Deworming tablets are given to children aged 1 to 19 years through schools and anganwadi centres. Those who miss the tablets on the day will receive them on January 12. Health workers’ instructions must be followed strictly when administering the tablets. Present at the inauguration were Director of Health Services K.J. Reena and District Education Officer Shibu Premlal.
