US Federal Agents Shoot Two in Portland During Targeted Stop, Raising Tensions
January 9, 2026
US federal agents shot two people in Portland, Oregon, Thursday afternoon. The shooting happened after agents tried to stop a vehicle. Officials say the driver tried to run over the agents, and one agent fired a shot. The incident involved US Border Patrol agents, not ICE officers. The Department of Homeland Security said the agents targeted an immigrant believed to be in the country illegally. They said the individual was linked to Tren de Aragua, a gang from Venezuela. No proof of this was given immediately. The shooting occurred near Adventist Health Portland around 2 pm local time. The driver fled after the shot was fired. Police later found two people with gunshot wounds nearby. They were taken to hospitals. The victims were a man and a woman, both Spanish speakers. The woman was shot in the chest; the man had two gunshot wounds. At a news conference, Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez said the FBI and Portland police were at the scene but did not name the lead investigator. This shooting came a day after a separate deadly shooting by ICE in Minneapolis, increasing tensions. Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley urged peaceful protests, saying, "Trump wants to generate riots. Don’t take the bait." Portland Mayor Keith Wilson called the situation "violence at the hands of federal agents," and asked ICE to pause operations until the investigation finishes. "We cannot sit by while constitutional protections erode and bloodshed mounts," said Wilson.
