A 42-year-old man, Mohd Shazaib, was arrested by the Commissioner’s Task Force, West Zone, for illegally buying and selling banned nylon-coated Chinese manja in Hyderabad. Police seized 345 bobbins valued at ₹6.9 lakh from Sadhu Kite Shop in Kalapathar, where Shazaib was caught stocking and selling the manja despite the state ban. The manja, known as Monofil Gold, was sourced from Haryana by an associate, Vikram Mehta, and brought to Hyderabad. Shazaib sold it at about ₹2,000 per bobbin, earning illegal profits. Telangana has banned the use, sale, stocking, and procurement of Chinese manja since January 2016 under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. The banned strings pose serious harm to birds and humans. Violators can face up to five years in jail, a fine up to ₹1 lakh, or both. Shazaib and the seized material are now with Kalapathar police for further investigation.
