Thick Fog and Traffic Jams Hit UAE Morning Commute; Police Urge Caution
January 13, 2026
Commuters in the UAE faced tough conditions Tuesday morning due to thick fog and heavy traffic. Abu Dhabi and parts of Dubai and Sharjah saw dangerously low visibility. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) reported fog blankets across coastal and inland areas early on. Visibility dropped below 1,000 metres in many spots, making driving risky on major roads. Temperatures were cooler than normal, encouraging fog and mist to linger.
Northern emirates grappled with traffic jams instead of fog alone. The E11 (Al Ittihad Road) from Sharjah to Dubai was heavily congested, with backups stretching from Al Nahda to Dubai International Airport tunnels. The E311 (Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road) also experienced "stop-and-go" traffic near Mirdif City Centre and the Sharjah-Dubai border. These jams added 20 to 30 minutes to usual commute times. Drivers were advised that the E611 (Emirates Road) might offer a quicker way.
Police across the UAE issued alerts asking drivers to be extra cautious. Abu Dhabi Police said, "Obey speed limits, follow traffic signs and use low-beam headlights when visibility is low." They also stressed maintaining safe distances and watching electronic boards with real-time speed updates. Authorities recommended not overtaking during fog and reducing speed, even if limits rise temporarily.
Emergency services emphasized that road safety depends on careful driving and watching out for pedestrians.
The NCM expects fog to clear by midday, leading to partly cloudy, pleasant weather in coastal cities with temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius. Humidity might rise again tonight, possibly causing more fog Wednesday morning. Traffic should improve by noon, but drivers should stay alert to changing speed limits on overhead signs.
