Police in Bareilly district have detained 12 people for offering namaz at a vacant house without official permission, officials said on Sunday, January 18, 2026. A video showing people praying inside the house circulated on social media, prompting action. SP (South) Anshika Verma said the police took precautionary steps after locals in Mohammadganj village informed them that the house was used as a temporary madrasa over weeks. "Conducting any new religious activity or gathering without permission is a violation of the law. Strict action will be taken if such activities are repeated," the SP said, urging people to maintain peace and law and order. The 12 detainees were charged under breach of peace sections and granted bail by a magistrate. Police are still searching for three others absconding. The vacant house belongs to a person named Hanif and was used for Friday prayers on January 16, 2026. Authorities noted no written permission or valid papers were provided. Some villagers opposed the regular prayers at the house and informed police, who then stopped the gathering. The viral online video is part of the ongoing investigation, officials confirmed.
