Kokrajhar Calm After Deadly Mob Violence; Army Deployed, Curfew In Force
January 21, 2026
No fresh violence was reported on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, in Kokrajhar district, Assam, following deadly mob clashes triggered by a road accident. Police have arrested 20 people in connection with the case. The most affected area, Karigaon, where violence and arson broke out on Monday night and Tuesday, is now under control, officials said.
Two people died in the violence — a Bodo tribal and an Adivasi youth from the Santhal community. Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita remain in place since Tuesday. Mobile internet services in Kokrajhar and nearby Chirang district continue to be suspended.
For the second day running, the Army conducted a flag march in the troubled area. Four Army columns, along with CRPF’s Rapid Action Force and Assam police personnel, have been deployed to maintain peace.
District officials stated, "We have set up five relief camps for people from both communities. They left their homes after the violence broke out. Efforts are on to address their feeling of insecurity and help them return." Inspector General of Police Akhilesh Kumar Singh said, "The situation is almost normal. People should keep faith in the administration and avoid rumours." He warned of strict action against rumour-mongers.
The trouble began when villagers tried to stop an SUV suspected of cattle theft. The driver refused to stop but soon lost control. The villagers attacked the vehicle's occupants, who were returning from inspecting a road project, and set the SUV on fire. Five people were injured in the assault. One Bodo youth died at Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital Tuesday night, while an Adivasi youth died earlier the same day.
Following the attack, tensions rose sharply. Large groups from both communities blocked a national highway. Mobs also set fire to homes, shops, an office building, a camp of an Adivasi extremist group in peace mode, and attacked a police outpost in Karigaon.
