A man armed with a chainsaw and a knife was shot dead by NSW police after breaking into a home on the mid-north coast. The man stabbed a 28-year-old woman during the attack. Officers from the Manning Great Lakes police district were called to a Tuncurry property shortly before 6:40 am on Friday after reports of a home invasion. On the way, police were informed that the woman had been stabbed and that the attacker fled in a white 4WD. The woman was found with serious wounds. Paramedics treated her, and she was flown to John Hunter hospital in serious but stable condition. Police chased the 4WD, which crashed on Forster Bridge after driving through a sports ground. The man then carjacked another vehicle and rammed a police car, injuring one officer slightly. The man continued fleeing, driving onto a property and entering a second home while still armed. Officers used a Taser multiple times to stop him. The man ran towards the officers and was shot. He died at the scene. Police believe the man was about 41 years old. A critical incident investigation is underway and will be led by the state crime command’s homicide squad. The police professional standards command and the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission will oversee the probe.
