The Kerala High Court has ordered joint secretaries of the Local Self-Government (LSG) department to carry out special drives to remove unauthorised boards, banners, and flags from public places. These drives must be completed within two weeks. Local body secretaries must also clear such material and impose fines on violators. The Principal Secretary of the LSG department must report the progress to the court after the drives. Justice Devan Ramachandran’s Bench warned that officials who do not follow the order will have to appear online in court with explanations. The court noted that unauthorised boards and flags have started to reappear in many areas, including Ernakulam. The court said secretaries who fail to fine violators should quit their post. It pointed out that rule breakers include ruling parties at both the Centre and State, who claim migrant workers placed the boards. The court also reminded the police to help stop this problem.
