Gemma Kingsley, 50, from Northumberland, has admitted to stealing more than £100,000 by tricking men with a fake multi-million inheritance story. At Swindon Crown Court, she pleaded guilty to theft and fraud charges. Kingsley claimed she was about to inherit £42 million and used forged documents to convince her victims. One man, believing her, spent tens of thousands on furniture, dental bills, and a wedding that never happened. Kingsley also used his bank cards without permission and lost money gambling. In another case, she persuaded a second man to pay deposits for luxury cars and hotel stays, again using his bank cards without approval. Police found she had similar short scams during autumn 2019, misusing others' bank cards for shopping. Beyond romance fraud, she also tricked a solicitor’s firm and a bank with false papers. Wiltshire Police began investigating in 2019 after a report about Kingsley using stolen bank details for a hotel stay. Multiple complaints from different police forces were combined. Detective Constable Melissa Pope said Kingsley caused “significant emotional anxiety and long-term mental and financial harm.” She added, “Kingsley wove a web of lies with her victims, assuring them she would repay the money through her inheritance.” DC Pope mentioned an expensive wedding was canceled due to the fraud, affecting distant family. Despite evidence, Kingsley delayed court, denying the charges and giving false health excuses. She now awaits sentencing on March 25. Police hope her guilty plea will help victims begin to recover from this betrayal.
