China Fines Companies for Fake ChatGPT and DeepSeek AI Services

China's market watchdog, the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), has fined companies for posing as OpenAI's ChatGPT and DeepSeek to cheat users. Shanghai Shangyun Internet Technology was fined 62,692.70 yuan (US$9,034) for running a fake ChatGPT service on Tencent's WeChat app. This service falsely claimed to be the official Chinese ChatGPT and tricked users into paying for AI chats. SAMR said this broke China’s Anti-Unfair Competition Law. The move reflects China’s growing control over the booming AI industry and aims to stop unfair business practices.
