Bird Flu Alert in Andhra Pradesh After Tamil Nadu Confirms Avian Influenza
February 7, 2026
Bird flu fears have spread to Andhra Pradesh after Tamil Nadu confirmed avian influenza in dead crows in Chennai. The Health Department in Andhra Pradesh issued an advisory and increased surveillance to stop the virus from spreading into the state. Officials clarified there are no bird flu cases reported in Andhra Pradesh so far and said there is no need to panic. Poultry and fish producers are advised to follow biosecurity measures as a precaution. Poultry farmers are worried because many migratory birds visit Andhra Pradesh every year. Over 10 lakh migratory birds breed and nest in Pulicat Lake, Coringa, Kolleru, Nelapattu, Uppalapadu, Telineelapuram, Telukunchi, and other bird sanctuaries across Andhra Pradesh annually. An Animal Husbandry Department official told The Hindu, "Birds fly from one place to another, carry the remnants of dead birds, and drop them in poultries, lakes and sanctuaries, causing a possible spread of the virus." Venkateswara Rao, a poultry farmer in Krishna district, said, "Crows, egrets, pelicans, herons and other birds travel between Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and other States. They arrange nests in mango and coconut orchards, and visit poultries. We have arranged a fence and biosecurity around our poultry." The state is alert and prepared to prevent an outbreak.
