US Sends Warships to Haiti as Political Crisis Deepens and Gang Violence Rises
February 7, 2026
Haiti faces uncertainty after the Transitional Presidential Council's term ended on February 7 without a new leader. The council, set up to control gang violence and hold elections, struggled with security problems and political fights since April 2024. Some council members tried to remove Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime. The US warned against this move and supports Fils-Aime staying on as leader. The US also demands the council leave power and has slapped sanctions on five members. On February 6, three US warships arrived in the Bay of Port-au-Prince. The US embassy said their presence “reflects the United States’ unwavering commitment to Haiti’s security, stability, and brighter future.” The embassy added, “As the Transitional Presidential Council’s mandate ends on February 7, we support Prime Minister Fils-Aime’s leadership in building a strong, prosperous and free Haiti.”
