China Tightens Military Discipline After Top Generals Face Corruption Probe
February 7, 2026
China's top military command has updated discipline rules for Communist Party members in the People's Liberation Army (PLA). The PLA Daily, the military’s official newspaper, reported these changes on Saturday. Though the details were not shared, this move came two weeks after top general Zhang Youxia, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), was placed under corruption investigation. Another senior officer, Liu Zhenli, chief of the CMC’s Joint Staff Department, is also under probe. Experts say the rule updates aim to "actively respond to key concerns" and close weak spots in military discipline. The anti-corruption campaign inside the PLA is intensifying, with lessons passed to Chinese President Xi Jinping, who leads the CMC. Xi and CMC vice-chairman Zhang Shengmin, who leads the military's anti-corruption work, are now the only remaining CMC members. The PLA Daily said the CMC approved the new rule changes, which will start on March 1.
