Woman Arrested for Smuggling 112 Illegal Birds Worth HK$15,000 at Lo Wu Border
February 7, 2026
A 26-year-old woman was caught trying to illegally import 112 birds into Hong Kong. Authorities arrested her at the Lo Wu border crossing on Saturday. She was found with a trolley carrying cages filled with multiple birds each. Customs officers seized the birds, estimating their value at about HK$15,000 (USD 1,920).
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department is investigating the case. It is illegal to bring birds into Hong Kong without valid health certificates. The maximum penalty for this offense is a fine of HK$25,000 upon conviction.
In a similar case last October, officials seized 10 parrots believed to be endangered along with 43 other birds at the same border. Those birds were valued at nearly HK$11,000. This latest arrest shows ongoing efforts to protect wildlife and uphold import rules at Hong Kong’s border points.
