The Karnataka State Police Complaints Authority (KSPCA) has asked the head of Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) to revise duty hours in Bengaluru. Currently, officers work very long shifts between 11 to 16 hours daily. Four KSRP battalions patrol the city every day. Officers on day duty start at 6 a.m., pick up weapons, and only return home by 10 p.m. They work 3-4 days of day duty and 1-3 days of night duty weekly, leaving little rest or family time. KSPCA member Mohan Kumar Damappa said this schedule causes severe stress, affects health with issues like high blood pressure and heart problems, and harms family life. Some officers’ marriages are reportedly at risk. The letter reminded that labour laws limit working hours to eight hours, but police have no such relief. The Authority suggested the police change timings to 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for day duty and 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. for night duty, except during emergencies. This change aims to improve officers’ physical and mental health and reduce work pressure. Mohan Kumar Damappa told The Hindu, "The core issue of streamlining work hours will not only improve the quality of work but also prove beneficial to the mental and physical health of the staff. This would reduce the corrupt practices to some extent." The proposal is pending review by the reserve police chief.
