Pakistan says ties with India are at their lowest since Partition. Bilateral talks have nearly stopped. Pakistan believes India plays a big role in causing terrorism inside Pakistan. This mistrust puts peace at risk. India accuses Pakistan of sponsoring terrorism. But Pakistan claims it is India that brings terrorism to their land. The main problem remains the unresolved Kashmir dispute. India scrapped Kashmir’s limited autonomy in 2019, calling the issue closed. But Kashmir is still internationally recognized as a disputed area. This leaves South Asia in a constant state of insecurity. Last year, both countries fought a limited war after the Pahalgam incident. Conflict threat persists until Kashmir’s dispute is solved fairly. India continues harsh repression in occupied Kashmir. The Pahalgam events worsened the harshness. Kashmiris face double punishment for being Kashmiri and Muslim. Human Rights Watch documented Hindu mob attacks against Kashmiri students and workers in India. UN experts reported "arbitrary arrests and detentions, suspicious deaths in custody, torture ... lynchings" of Muslims, including Kashmiris. These facts challenge India’s image as the “world’s largest democracy.” Pakistan wants India to negotiate Kashmir. But India, led by Narendra Modi, rejects talks and third-party mediation. The UN and others urge attention to Kashmir’s human rights crisis. US President Donald Trump has offered to help solve the dispute. He said last year he stopped a war between Pakistan and India and claimed, "I can solve anything." He may use his Board of Peace for this. India will find it hard to oppose US pressure, shown by its recent decision to stop buying Russian oil.
