China’s micro drama industry is becoming a major jobs lifeline for young graduates. Expected to create about 690,000 direct jobs by 2025, it supports over 2 million positions including related roles, says a report from Peking University’s National School of Development. Micro dramas are short episodes packed with fast stories and twists. They grab viewers quickly and have lower costs to produce. This suits the country’s high youth unemployment problem well. The national monthly output of micro dramas is steady at around 3,000, according to Xinhua news agency. Production teams have grown from about 12 people to 60-90, covering directing, lighting, costumes, and more. Shutian Yu, a recent University of Sussex master’s graduate, found new career stability acting in micro dramas since 2024. This fast-rising industry offers exciting, sustainable opportunities for China’s young workforce.
