A special Delhi court has declared former Amira Pure Foods CMD Karan A. Chanana and whole-time director Anita Daing as "fugitive economic offenders." They face serious charges of bank loan fraud and money laundering in a case involving ₹1,201.85 crore. The court has ordered the confiscation of their movable and immovable assets worth ₹123.85 crore under the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act. The accused allegedly defaulted on interest repayments, hid financial details, routed transactions outside banks, and manipulated stock records. Canara Bank reported the loan account as a non-performing asset on September 29, 2017. A forensic audit from April 2015 to March 2018 found evidence of fraud, cheating, fund diversion, and stock manipulation. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigation revealed Mr. Chanana acted as the link between the company and banks. Together with Ms. Daing, he sought loans from Canara Bank and consortium lenders. Around ₹700 crore of loan funds were diverted using shell companies. Ms. Daing resigned in May 2016 as banks began declaring the accounts as NPAs. Both failed to cooperate with ED summonses. Mr. Chanana left India through Mumbai on October 16, 2017, and Ms. Daing left via Delhi on December 29, 2016. Open-ended non-bailable warrants were issued on May 28, 2025. They are believed to be in England and Dubai respectively. The Delhi court issued notices to them, but no appearance was made. The Ministry of Home Affairs helped serve notices through Indian missions abroad, but the accused refused to return to face prosecution. The court stated, "They have also left India so as to avoid criminal prosecution." Both were formally declared fugitive economic offenders under Section 10 of the Act, and their assets will be seized as ordered.
