At the Government Tribal Welfare Ashram School for Boys in Devarapalli, Polavaram district, 35 students have been discharged from hospitals after falling ill from a semi-cooked breakfast on February 7. Ten students are still under medical observation as of Monday. A total of 106 students reportedly fell sick and were admitted to Rampachodavaram Area Hospital and Maredumilli Primary Health Centre. Tribal Welfare Department In-charge Director V. Prasanna Venkatesh confirmed that only 10 students remain hospitalized. Mr. Prasanna Venkatesh, Polavaram District Joint Collector, and Rampachodavaram ITDA Project Officer B. Smaran Raju inspected the school to investigate. They spoke with recovered students and checked the food quality and government-approved menu. The officials also ate lunch with the students to better assess the food served. Responding to student complaints, Mr. Prasanna Venkatesh ordered immediate measures to supply safe drinking water and repair toilets to improve hygiene at the school. Following the incident, the Deputy Warden and cook were suspended on February 8 for negligence. A detailed report on the incident will be submitted by Mr. Prasanna Venkatesh to higher authorities.
