Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said many flat owners of the fire-hit Tai Po public estate want to sell their flats to the government. This is part of a long-term plan to rehouse residents after the deadly fire at Wang Fuk Court, which killed at least 168 people. Authorities have collected residents' preferences through questionnaires spread by social workers. Options include a buyout, a flat-for-flat exchange, or redevelopment that may take up to 10 years. Lee said, "A significant portion of flat owners have expressed a willingness to consider the government’s acquisition of their ownership rights. Some have indicated that they will need to see the actual acquisition price first." The government task force, led by Deputy Financial Secretary Michael Wong Wai-lun, faces challenges. They need to balance the different needs of families and manage possible delays from legal disputes. Lee promised to finalize the rehousing plan as soon as possible.
