Kerala University Student Protests Turn Violent Over Festival Fund Denial
February 10, 2026
Kerala University became a battlefield again on Tuesday as students clashed with police during a protest. The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) was protesting the alleged denial of funds for the University Union Festival. Activists tried to break barricades at the university headquarters, leading to violent clashes.
Police arrested two protesters, including Union chairperson Ashwin S. Nair. After the arrest, protesters blocked the police vehicle carrying him. Police used force and water cannons to clear the crowd and continue their movement.
The Lok Bhavan stepped in after Vice-Chancellor in-charge Mohanan Kunnummal informed them. The State Police Chief was instructed to remove protesters from campus. The demonstration later moved onto nearby streets, with SFI activists marching to Cantonment police station.
The Vice-Chancellor ordered the Registrar to file a formal complaint for damage to university property caused during the violent protests.
SFI has been protesting against the refusal to allow the festival and the failure to provide travel allowances to student athletes.
Adding fuel to the fire, Prof. Kunnummal declared the current University Union invalid and moved to form a General Council to hold fresh elections. This dissolved the existing union, whose term was meant to last until February 28. SFI claims this is a retaliatory act to silence student voices. University officials said the decision followed proper procedures.
