The Supreme Court on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, agreed to hear the Uttar Pradesh government's plea. The plea challenges the Allahabad High Court order that canceled the death penalty for four accused and life imprisonment for another in the 2007 Rampur CRPF camp terror attack case. Eight CRPF personnel died and five were injured in the attack on the night of December 31, 2007. The bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta issued notices to the accused and posted the case for hearing in four weeks. Advocate M.S. Khan appeared for the five accused. The state is challenging the High Court's October 29 verdict. The High Court had set aside the trial court's order that awarded capital punishment and life imprisonment. It acquitted Mohd Sharif, Sabauddin, Imran Shahjad, Mohd Farooq, and Jang Bahadur Khan on murder and other serious charges. The court said the prosecution "miserably failed to prove the case against the accused for the principal offence beyond reasonable doubt." However, the High Court found the five guilty under Section 25 (1-A) of the Arms Act and sentenced them to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. The case is now set for further hearing in the Supreme Court.
