New DOJ Files Raise Questions on Jeffrey Epstein's 2019 Death in NYC Jail
February 14, 2026
Nearly seven years after Jeffrey Epstein died, new Justice Department files have revealed fresh details about his final hours inside a New York jail on August 10, 2019. Epstein, 66, was held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in Manhattan, charged with sex trafficking. He was placed in a Special Housing Unit due to safety and suicide concerns.
On July 23, Epstein was found semi-conscious, with a noose around his neck. He blamed his cellmate Nicholas Tartaglione, who denied the attempt and later said he was placed there to kill Epstein. Epstein told a prison psychologist he was not suicidal and wanted to live.
Epstein was on special watch with 30-minute checks and surprise room visits. Yet, on August 9, his cellmate was moved, and Epstein was left alone, against protocols. That day, guards missed inmate counts and wellness checks. An official statement about his death was mistakenly dated a day early.
At 10:39 pm on August 9, surveillance captured "a flash of orange" moving on the stairs—an unknown figure carrying prison linens. Guards failed to properly check inmates overnight and were later charged with falsifying records, though charges were dropped.
At 6:33 am on August 10, guard Michael Thomas found Epstein hanging in his cell. Photos showed the scene was messy. Dr. Michael Baden, hired by Epstein's brother, said neck injuries suggested strangulation, not suicide. But New York's medical examiner officially ruled Epstein's death as suicide.
Then-Attorney General William Barr called the events a "perfect storm of screw-ups." These new files have reopened questions about what really happened during Epstein’s last hours in the federal jail.
