Kerala Medical College Doctors Begin Indefinite OPD Boycott Over Pay Arrears
February 16, 2026
Medical college doctors across Kerala began an indefinite boycott of outpatient services and academic activities from Monday. This is part of a protest that started on July 1, 2025. Doctors demand immediate payment of long-pending pay revision arrears from 2016, revision of the pension ceiling, more faculty posts matching the patient load, and better infrastructure.
The Kerala Government Medical College Teachers’ Association (KGMCTA) said talks with the government have not resolved these issues. While some pay disparity was corrected for entry-level staff, major demands remain unmet. KGMCTA said, "Although the government announced full pay revision arrears to other State government employees, medical college doctors have been completely excluded."
Doctors have been on a non-cooperation strike, and for 21 days, faculty members held relay hunger strikes in the capital. On Monday, senior doctors stayed away from OP clinics, which postgraduate students and house surgeons handled.
Essential medical services such as emergency care, labour rooms, emergency surgeries, ICUs, post-mortem examinations, and urgent labs continue to function.
As part of the protest, marches and dharnas have taken place at all medical colleges. KGMCTA warned, "Unless the government takes proactive steps to resolve the stalemate, doctors will suspend all non-emergency surgeries and other elective procedures indefinitely starting February 19. From February 26, members will withdraw from all examination-related duties."
