Massive Traffic Jam Hits Hong Kong on Last Day of Lunar New Year Flower Market
February 17, 2026
Parts of Hong Kong Island were jammed on Monday as the last day of the Lunar New Year flower market at Victoria Park caused heavy crowds. Roads around the market and nearby tram and bus routes came to a near standstill. At 7 pm, buses and trams in Causeway Bay were stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Some drivers honked fiercely as cars cut in front of them. A South China Morning Post reporter spent 30 minutes on a tram going just one stop before leaving at Victoria Park. Trying to walk to North Point failed because of dense street crowds. Police advised switching to the MTR since buses were caught in traffic. At Yee Wo Street near Victoria Park, long lines formed at bus stops. A woman named Fanny, 45, waited in line, saying she was trying to reach her mother’s home about 1 km away at Lai Tak Tsuen housing estate.
