A unique Pikachu Illustrator Pokemon card fetched an astounding US$16.5 million at a recent auction, shattering the world record for the most expensive trading card ever sold. The card, graded PSA 10, was first bought by US YouTuber Logan Paul in 2021 for US$5.28 million. This time, it was acquired by AJ Scaramucci, son of former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci, at an auction held by Goldin on Monday. Guinness World Records verified and certified the sale as the highest price ever paid for a Pokemon card and any trading card at auction. After the sale, Logan Paul placed the card, which was attached to a US$75,000 diamond necklace, around Scaramucci's neck. The Pikachu Illustrator card is considered unique and highly rare among collectors. There are now more than 1,000 Pokemon characters ranging from Pikachu the mouse to Jigglypuff the balloon to Lucario, released in generations over the years.
