Tens of thousands gathered at Victoria Harbour as Hong Kong’s Lunar New Year fireworks amazed with gold ingots and horseshoes, welcoming the Year of the Horse. The 23-minute spectacle featured 31,888 pyrotechnic shells and cost HK$19 million (US$2.4 million), sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Despite the grand show, some mainland visitors said they planned to leave after the event, despite government efforts to increase spending. Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu addressed the crowd, calling the display a symbol of “thousands of horses galloping forward.” He said, “Tonight, as that spirit of galloping forward fills the sky, we see why Hong Kong is where the East meets the West, where Asian traditions and modern celebrations light up the sky together.” Lee urged everyone, “In the new year, let’s march forward bravely and confidently together, running at a higher speed and making new achievements.” He also promised to carry out reforms quickly and align Hong Kong’s growth with China’s 15th five-year plan.
