The law, dating back over a century, allows up to three years in prison for such cases. Magistrate Fine Mayambu declared, "The two accepted ownership of the charms. Phiri further demonstrated that the chameleon's tail, once pricked and used in the ritual, would cause death to occur within five days." The prosecution revealed a political twist: the two were hired by the brother of a fugitive former MP, Emmanuel Jay Jay Banda, who is accused of robbery and attempted murder. Phiri and Candunde claimed they were just traditional healers, but the court did not buy it. Interestingly, President Hichilema himself has publicly said, "I don't believe in witchcraft. Never believe in witchcraft as a person, as a family, as a Christian. I don't believe in witchcraft," during an August 2025 podcast.
