Delhi High Court Demands Police Update on North-East Delhi Riots Probe, Questions Fairness of Investigation
November 19, 2025
The Delhi High Court turned up the heat on Tuesday, demanding a clear status update from the police about the ongoing investigations in the north-east Delhi riots cases from February 2020. A special Bench of Justices Vivek Chaudhary and Manoj Jain took charge of hearing several petitions tied to the violence, including those pushing for FIRs against some political leaders accused of making hate speeches.
During the session, the lawyer for one petitioner claimed the police probe was unfair and insisted on an independent inquiry to ensure justice. These petitions have been hanging fire in the High Court for a long time, with some calling for special investigation teams to dig deeper and FIRs against police officers involved.
The court was straight and sharp. "You challenge it before the Magistrate. The Magistrate will supervise. These are questions of fact. We cannot entertain questions of fact in writ petitions. You can give that evidence to the Magistrate, who will look into it and pass orders," the Bench said, pointing to the right legal path.
Adding a dash of impatience, the judges noted, "These petitions have been pending for so long for no good reason. FIRs have been registered and the police are investigating." They set the next hearing on November 21, signaling that the court expects swift progress on this tedious case.
The saga of the north-east Delhi riots continues to grip attention as the High Court pushes for accountability but also insists on following the proper legal channels to resolve conflicting facts. Will the investigations bring justice soon? The court’s words echo a mix of urgency and clarity on how the law should roll.
