Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar Takes On Student Unrest in University Hostels With Vice-Chancellors
November 28, 2025
Kerala’s Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar is gearing up to zero in on the troublesome issue of student unrest in university hostels across the state. In a strong move, the Raj Bhavan has officially told all Vice-Chancellors that the Governor will discuss the “growing incidents of student unrest in the university hostels.” This important talk will take place on December 2 during a special programme at Calicut University, where 14 Vice-Chancellors will be present.
But that’s not all that is on Mr. Arlekar’s busy agenda! During his visit, he will also release a book about former Finance Minister John Matthai, launch six Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), and meet the Director of the Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre.
After these events, the key focus will shift to the meeting with the Vice-Chancellors. Here, strict steps to control and prevent student unrest on campuses will be taken up. The Governor is serious about creating safer and peaceful environments in the hostels and universities.
A crucial point for discussion will be the recommendations from the Commission of Inquiry led by former Kerala High Court judge A. Hariprasad. This commission was set up after the sad death of Sidharthan J.S., a veterinary student from Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU). The commission found faults with the KVASU Vice-Chancellor, especially on keeping campus discipline and stopping ragging, which may have led to this tragic suicide.
In a strong call for action, universities have also been told to send copies of their current hostel allotment rules. This will help to better understand and perhaps tighten the management of hostels.
In short, Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar is ready to bring in a new wave of control to tame unrest and make university life safer for all students.
