Over 350 Dead in Southeast Asia Floods and Landslides Amid Intense Monsoon Rains
November 29, 2025
The death toll from severe floods and landslides in southeast Asia has risen past 350. Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia are cleaning up and rescuing stranded people. Heavy monsoon rains hit these countries this week, killing hundreds and leaving many trapped on rooftops.
In Indonesia's Sumatra island, more than 100 people are missing. Disaster officials reported over 200 deaths there. Ilham Wahab, from West Sumatra’s disaster agency, said, “As of tonight, 61 fatalities have been recorded, and 90 are still being searched for.” North Sumatra reported 116 deaths, and Aceh province counted 35.
Suharyanto, head of Indonesia’s national disaster agency, said a cloud seeding operation will start in West Sumatra to reduce rain, although most of the heavy rain had stopped.
Thailand faced some of its worst floods in a decade, with water reaching three meters in Songkhla province. The death toll there is 162, including 145 in southern Thailand alone. A hospital in Hat Yai moved bodies to refrigerated trucks after its morgue was full.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul apologized, saying, “I really have to apologise to them for letting this happen during the time I am in government.” He promised a two-week clean-up in the worst-hit districts. The government announced help including up to 2 million baht ($62,000) for families who lost loved ones.
Shop owner Rachane Remsringam, whose store in the flood zone was looted, said he lost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Criticism of the flood management grew, leading to the suspension of two local officials. An opposition MP said the government made “errors in handling the flood crisis.”
In Malaysia, floods killed two people and submerged parts of northern Perlis state.
The monsoon season from June to September brings heavy rain, landslides, and floods every year. This time, a tropical storm made things worse. Climate change is changing storms, causing heavier rain and stronger winds.
