Cyclone Ditwah Claims 3 Lives and Floods Crops in Tamil Nadu
November 30, 2025
Since Saturday evening, Cyclone Ditwah has battered Tamil Nadu with heavy rains, resulting in three deaths across three districts. Two people died due to wall collapses in Thanjavur and Thoothukudi, while one lost life to electrocution in Mayiladuthurai, said State Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran on Sunday morning.
The cyclone flooded about 56,000 hectares of crops, affecting 24,000 hectares in Nagapattinam, 15,000 in Tiruvarur, and 8,000 in Mayiladuthurai. Damage assessments will be carried out once floodwaters recede so the Chief Minister can decide on farmer compensation.
Nearly 230 huts were damaged by the rains. The State has deployed 38 National Disaster Response Force teams, including 10 newly arrived units, to help affected areas.
More than 2,300 people are sheltered in 38 relief camps spread over nine districts—Nagapattinam (10 camps), Pudukkottai (9), Villupuram (7), Tiruvarur (4), Mayiladuthurai and Ramanathapuram (2 each), and one each in Chengalpattu, Ranipet, and Thanjavur.
The government is also assisting Tamil Nadu residents stranded in Sri Lanka to return safely. Although the weather has cleared in Sri Lanka for air traffic, local conditions are still improving.
Minister Ramachandran assured the public that the situation remains under control and is being closely managed by government teams and district administrations.
