Thieves stole €90,000 (£79,000; $104,000) worth of snails from L'Escargot Des Grands Crus, a farm near Reims, France. The farm supplies top restaurants and private clients with gourmet snails, a French delicacy known as escargot. The break-in happened overnight into Monday when the thieves cut through a border fence and broke into the farm buildings. The farm reported the theft to police days later. "This is definitely not the kind of post we thought we'd write as the holidays approach," said the farm in a statement. They called the theft "a shock, an incomprehension, and a real blow to the entire team". The stolen stock included both fresh and frozen snails ready for sale. The farm manager, Jean-Mathieu Dauvergne, told Franceinfo the stolen goods represented the end-of-year stock meant to meet holiday demand. The farm is now working hard to restock in time for Christmas and New Year's. They supply notable restaurants such as the Michelin-starred Les Crayères in Reims. Photos from the farm show empty shelves and fridges where the snails were stored. Edible snails are popular in France, especially during December when sales rise for festive dinners. Police are investigating the crime to track down the culprits.
