Kerala Starts Tiger Census First Phase from December 1 to 8 in 37 Forest Divisions
November 30, 2025
The first phase of the All India Tiger Estimation 2025-26 will take place across 37 forest divisions in Kerala from December 1 to 8. The counting will happen in three steps between December and April 2026. On December 8, teams will collect data along special 2-km line transects. An official statement says the Forest department has instructed regional leaders to support the tiger census staff fully. This will help the personnel return home to vote in local body elections scheduled for December 9. For officers working in remote forests, extra arrangements will be made to allow them to vote on time. The second phase will involve analyzing data from the first phase. The third phase includes camera traps set up in Periyar and Parambikulam reserves and surrounding forests. This census helps track tiger numbers and protect wildlife.
