The Crime Branch-CID (CB-CID) of Tamil Nadu Police has reached out to Interpol and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU), Gandhinagar, to speed up two key reports. These reports are crucial for solving the dacoity-cum-murder at former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's estate bungalow in Kodanad, Nilgiris, which happened in 2017. CB-CID asked Interpol for immediate help to trace the origin of several calls made to two main accused: Jayalalithaa’s ex-driver C. Kanagaraj from Salem district and K.V. Sayan from Kerala’s Thrissur district. These calls came from a seven-digit number using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) on April 27 and 28, 2017 — days right after the crime occurred. Tracking these calls is key for the special investigation team to move forward in the case. CB-CID sent a request to Interpol through the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), India’s national center for Interpol, about a week ago. At the same time, CB-CID asked the NFSU to hurry up with cyber forensic analysis of call detail records (CDRs). These records belong to over 30 suspects and are stored on outdated magnetic tapes provided by BSNL. Ten such tapes were sent for data extraction in 2023. The CDR analysis is expected to reveal fresh clues about the crime’s planning, carrying out, and aftermath. Of note, Kanagaraj, the first accused, died in a road accident near Attur on April 28, 2017. Sayan was seriously injured in another accident on the Palakkad-Thrissur Road the following day, which claimed the lives of his wife and daughter.
