IPFT Plans Delhi Rally for Autonomous Council and Pushes Roman Script Demand in Tripura
November 30, 2025
The Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), a junior ally of the BJP coalition, is gearing up for a show of strength. The party will hold a demonstration in New Delhi next month demanding an amendment to Article 125 of the Constitution. This will push for expanding an autonomous district council, notably the Tipra Territorial Council similar to the Bodo Territorial Council.
IPFT leaders, speaking on November 30, 2025, said they have not dropped the separate tribal state demand but are currently focusing on setting up the council. The Delhi protest will be in alliance with the National Federation of New States (NFNS), where IPFT is a member.
Currently, IPFT has limited influence in Tripura politics, holding only one seat in the state assembly and cabinet under Chief Minister Manik Saha. The rise of the Tipra Motha Party with its Greater Tipraland agenda has overshadowed IPFT. To stay relevant, IPFT is echoing similar demands.
In addition to the Delhi rally, the party will organize a 'students and youth rally' in Agartala next month. The rally will press for using the Roman script instead of Bangla script for the Kokborok language in CBSE and state board exams for secondary and higher secondary levels. The date and venue await police approval.
This script issue came back to the forefront just a day after Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman voiced alarm over indigenous community anger about not permitting answer sheets in Roman script. He called for an immediate solution to this heated matter.
