Deadly Landslide in Peru Sinks Ferry, 12 Dead and 50 Missing
December 2, 2025
At least 12 people have died and around 50 are missing after a landslide struck two boats docked at a river port in Peru's Amazon rainforest. The incident happened early Monday at about 05:00 local time (10:00 GMT) in Iparia, Ucayali region. A ferry sank, and another boat was badly damaged. Police and the Peruvian Navy are searching for survivors. The landslide was caused by erosion along the Ucayali River bank. The river is a headwater of the Amazon. Around 50 people were on one of the boats, including children, teachers, and doctors. Rescue efforts have been tough because of the fast river currents. Injured people have been taken to hospitals. Authorities are working closely with families at the disaster site to confirm how many are yet to be found. One of the boats had left Pucallpa heading north toward riverside communities like Caco Macaya, Curiaca del Caco, and Pueblo Nuevo del Caco.
