Opposition MPs Protest New Labour Codes, Demand Scrapping at Parliament
December 3, 2025
On December 3, 2025, several Opposition MPs protested against new labour codes at the Parliament House complex. Leaders including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi took part. Alongside MPs from Congress, DMK, TMC, and Left parties, they held posters and shouted slogans demanding the scrapping of the new laws.
The protest took place in front of the Makar Dwar of Parliament. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, TMC's Dola Sen, DMK's K. Kanimozhi and A. Raja, CPI (M)'s John Brittas, and CPI (ML) Liberation's Sudama Prasad also joined in. They carried a large banner reading, 'No to Corporate Jungle Raj, Yes to Labour Justice.'
The central government notified four labour codes last month after delays since 2020. These codes combine 29 existing laws into the Code of Wages (2019), Industrial Relations Code (2020), Code on Social Security (2020), and Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code (2020).
These codes introduce mandatory appointment letters, universal social security for gig, contract, and migrant workers, statutory minimum wages, timely wage payments, and expanded rights and safety for women workers. They also include provisions like free health check-ups for workers above 40.
However, trade unions and opposition parties criticize the codes for unclear retrenchment rules and increased government power. The threshold for government approval for layoffs and closures was raised from 100 to 300 workers. Working hours increased to 12 hours in factories and 10 in shops, up from 9 hours.
Opposition MPs demand the government roll back these labour codes, calling for better labour protections and justice.
