As local body polls approach, tourism entrepreneurs and stakeholders in Kozhikode district are calling on candidates to support smart, sustainable plans for ecotourism. Ecotourism and farm tourism are booming sectors of Kerala's tourism economy. "Routine maintenance alone is not enough. What we need is an attractive action plan tailored to each local body and ecotourism centres that can attract international sightseers," says N. Shibin, a tourism entrepreneur from Vayalada. He suggests stronger destination management committees with more power and a share of revenue from tourism sites. The Kozhikode-based Malabar Chamber of Commerce backs this, urging structured planning and showcasing Malabar’s attractions at international fairs. Detailed reports for even small tourist spots are advised to get government help. Over 15 tourism associations in Malabar are ready to work with local officials if there is steady administrative support. They argue that election candidates must prioritize tourism development, especially ecotourism and local livelihood projects, in their campaigns. Though many villages near Kozhikode have homestays and resorts, locals say chances for income, especially for poor families, remain untapped. New opportunities like local food, handicrafts, cultural shows, farm visits, and adventure tourism have big potential. "Over the past decade, ecotourism sites like Thusharagiri, Arippara, Kakkayam, and Vayalada have become popular. We want more domestic tourism promotions with local people involved," says P.V. Ajinas, a tourist taxi operator. Residents in panchayats such as Koodaranji, Kodenchery, and Thiruvambady have asked candidates to focus on projects that promote sustainable livelihoods. Tour operators also note Kozhikode has untapped potential in pilgrim tourism, attracting visitors interested in heritage, culture, and spirituality.
