India Pushes to Boost Tea Exports to China Amid Rising Demand for Darjeeling, Masala Teas
December 4, 2025
India is working to raise its tea exports to China, where Darjeeling and Masala teas are becoming popular among consumers who usually prefer green tea. On December 3, 2025, top Chinese tea houses joined the Indian Tea Buyer-Seller Meet organized by India’s Embassy in Beijing. They shared insights on both Indian and Chinese tea cultures.
According to Chinese customs data, India’s tea exports to China were $20 million last year. This year, from January to October, exports jumped to $37 million. This rise shows growing demand for Indian teas like Darjeeling and Masala in a green tea-dominated market.
India’s Deputy Ambassador to China, Abhishek Shukla, said, "A cup of tea is a connection to the land and more.." He highlighted tea's role as a cultural bridge between India and China. "Every cup of tea is more than just a drink — it is a connection to the land, the climate, and the people who cultivate it," he added.
Shukla stressed the endless potential for tea cooperation between the countries. He noted that younger Chinese tea drinkers are exploring new flavors beyond traditional green, black, and oolong teas. "India's diverse offerings, from bold Assam and elegant Darjeeling to fragrant Nilgiri and strong CTC teas, have a place in every corner of this exploration," he said.
Leading Chinese tea companies including Dongli Garden, Laoshe Teahouse, Qingxinglin Teahouse, and Wangfu Teahouse attended the meet and engaged with Tea Board of India officials. This event signals India’s desire to expand its footprint in the world’s largest tea producer’s market.
