Cyclone Ditwah Fills 1,250 More Tamil Nadu Irrigation Tanks to Full Capacity

Cyclone Ditwah brought much-needed rain to Tamil Nadu, filling about 1,250 more irrigation tanks to 100% capacity. On November 24, 2,614 tanks were full. By December 4, this number climbed to 3,865. The cyclone began as a deep depression over Sri Lanka on November 27, then moved north, weakening by December 4.
In 10 days, districts like Madurai and Tiruneveli added 194 full tanks each. Tenkasi added 181, Thanjavur 178, and Tiruvallur 174. Now, Madurai has 463 tanks full, Tiruneveli 290, Tenkasi 342, Thanjavur 372, and Tiruvallur 312.
Tanks with 76% to 99% water levels also rose by 348, reaching 2,955. Chengalpattu saw the biggest increase here, with 113 more tanks in this range, now totaling 180. Ramanathapuram and Pudukottai also saw growth, adding 89 and 49 tanks respectively. Currently, Ramanathapuram has 153 tanks and Pudukottai 201 in this water level range.
This boost in water storage is a positive sign for irrigation and farming in Tamil Nadu after the cyclone.
